Novi Sad - The city that never sleeps

Novi Sad, Neoplanta, Újvidék, or New Now – various names for a city that remembers many historical events, at the crossroads of East and West, on the breeze of the Pannonian plain, but always its own, proud and open to all well-wishers. The city that never sleeps, welcomed guests with the warm smile of the young farm girls, the smell of fresh bread from an old oven and fish stew made from freshly caught catfish from the Danube, the intoxicating smell of roasted chestnuts in Zmaj-Jovina Street on cold winter days while the cold wind whips like from a novel Wuthering Heights. Even today, it resists the onslaught of progress, which brings the splendor of glass facades and modern buildings tailored to the 21st century, to preserve from oblivion narrow cobblestone alleys, windows with stained glass windows, and fragrant quinces, old reed roofs covered with clay roofing tiles. These Einfahrt gates remember black horses and carriages decorated to go to the Sunday service in the Almaška church. There is also Dunavska Street with the Fish Market, in its old, authentic glory, which once upon a time was used by merchants to drive carts to the Petrovaradin fortress – Gibraltar on the Danube, a bastion of freedom from 1692. On the fortress, since 1750, the time has been measured by a “drunken clock” with a large hand showing hours, not minutes so that the fishermen from the Danube could see in the fog that it was time to collect their nets. Once upon a time, a train went to the fortress (or the popular Đava) and further to the city of Zemun, with the shrill sound of the steam locomotive’s horn, crossing the wide Danube over the iron bridge from 1883. A tram used to go along the same street, as far back as 1911, and the memory is remembered by the famous tram, the Trčika cafe, which doesn’t go anywhere, but evokes romantic memories and nostalgia. From Trčika, the path takes you to Freedom Square, where the Cathedral from 1894, then along Zmaj-Jovin Street, where the oldest house in Novi Sad, from 1720, is located, to the Bishop’s Palace, which is located on the site of the first bishop’s palace from 1741, demolished in 1849, and to the Orthodox Cathedral, built in 1905 on the foundations of the first church from 1734.

Even when we leave the mentioned years behind us, a kind of time machine will take you back to ancient times, it is enough to visit Laza Telečki Street, with countless cafes, pubs, bars, and clubs, all within 200 meters, the restaurant Kod fazana 1822, with authentic music tambourines and old-fashioned dishes from the forgotten menus of our grandmothers: noodles with poppy seeds, sausage fritter with potatoes, chicken Ajmokac (stew) with gnocchi, or deer stew with dough and currants.

In such a city, you must be relaxed, cheerful, open, and ready for new challenges. When all these nostalgic waves “wash” over you, you have no choice but to fit into the ambiance and enjoy the time machine.

The Ideall Center set out to realize its mission – to unlock the creative potential of new generations, which for years was held back by the classical education system, based on memorizing and repeating facts, instead of encouraging creative, algorithmic, and entrepreneurial ways of thinking. The fact that some new kids are still growing in Jovan Cvijić Street (and beyond) is encouraging, ready to accept the challenge and seek answers to the questions of Why (is it so) and How (change things for the better). And while that is the case, there is hope for us. Come to Novi Sad to create a better future together.

Sarajevo - my Asylum

In this world, there is a unique city. City of Sarajevo, European Jerusalem, as they call it. The capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. One, the only and the most beautiful.

While waiting for the tram at Baščaršija, a man from Sarajevo stared at the scene ahead. Sebilj, the minarets of the mosque, old kebab shops, cafes and pastry shops, people drinking water from the fountain near Sebilj and children feeding the pigeons. When you take a closer look at just that sight of the city, you realize that being born here and having the opportunity to be in this city is truly a gift from a higher power. Sarajevo is a city with a soul. You feel a special warmth when you walk through the streets of Sarajevo. No city has such warmth. This city is really special. Noon. Call to prayer. And besides the call to prayer, the sounds of church bells were also heard. Only in this city can you hear such sounds. Only here you can go from the Ottoman Empire to the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in one step. There is nothing like it in the world. Take a walk along Ferhadija and Titova Street. Watch residents. Then stand in front of the Eternal Fire and look at it, you feel the pain and suffering of those people. Then look at the people again. What do you notice? Cheerfulness, a smile. Everyone has a smile on their face. Everyone would love to talk to you, help you, direct you. Well, welcome to Sarajevo!

And in Sarajevo, the one and only “High School of Economics Sarajevo.” The street address Zmaja od Bosna number 39 means a fortune to me. It is not an ordinary building with a beautifully landscaped yard and artwork on the wall – it is my second home and the place that is responsible for my knowledge that I gather day by day. My school is also a second home for our wonderful teachers, who selflessly pass on their knowledge to us and raise us as their own children. You can’t feel uncomfortable and insecure in our school. There will always be someone who will lend you a hand and help you, even when you think that everything is sinking into the depths of the deepest lakes. I can say that compared to other schools, the High School of Economics is like Sarajevo compared to other cities. No school will welcome you like the High School of Economics. I am grateful that I had the honor of walking the corridors of a school like this. You know you had a good time in High School when you remember with a smile on your face big breaks on the bench in the yard, walks around the Wilsons, school trips, field trips, visits to various museums and institutions, and so on, and so on… and the list can go on and on. And most of all, you remember the people with whom you went through all that and went around. And then you are sure that you really had a good time and that you want it all over again. If I were to enroll again, without a second thought, I would choose High School of Economics. If the only thing I ever did in my life was enroll in this school, I wouldn’t know what regret is. A man from Sarajevo from the beginning of this story admired my words about the school I attended. When we finished the conversation, the man thanked me from the bottom of his heart. He got up from the bench. I handed him the newspaper and thanked him for the nice conversation. That’s when the tram came. “Are you coming in?” he asked. “No, I’ll stay a little longer,” I told him. She remained on the bench, looking at the scene in front of her and remembering High School. I think that now I love Sarajevo even more – my city. And I hope you too…

A postcard from Osijek

Hey, lega! Don’t be surprised if a friend, acquaintance or even a complete stranger uses that word when speaking with you in the largest city of Eastern Slavonia. In Osijek, everyone is lega. This word stands for warmth, intimacy, affection, all characteristic of the whole of Slavonia!

The story of Osijek begins in Tvrđa (the Fortress), the most famous symbol of the city! The Austrians built it in 1712 as a defensive fortress. Although its purpose has changed over the centuries, it has always remained the center of life in Osijek!

The most fascinating building in Tvrđa, our School of Economics and Administration Osijek, is situated in Trg Svetog Trojstva (the Holy Trinity Square). The school started operating in the school year 1893/1894 and 13 students enrolled in the first grade. Even after 130 years, we are extremely proud of the title of the most innovative school in the Republic of Croatia!

As you enter the city center, you are greeted by the beautiful co-cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, built in 1900 thanks to Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer. Streets in many Croatian cities and towns are named after him, and the people of Osijek, in slang terms and terms of endearment, call their street Štrosika!

Osijek is the first place in Europe that started using trams in 1884! On March 15, 2016, the British King Charles III visited Osijek and rode the Osijek tram! The people of Osijek joked, placing a note next to his photo: Lega, pay for the ticket, this is Osijek! Great-great-grandfather of King Charles III and great-grandfather of Queen Elizabeth II, Franz von Teck, was born in Osijek!

There is also a legend about Osijek’s Romeo and Juliet! The police caught a young man and accused him of the crime. In order to save the reputation of his sweetheart, he confessed to a crime he did not commit. When the girl found out the truth and tried to save him, it was too late. Today we remember that sad story in the Chapel of the Stone Cross, known as the Chapel of Unrequited Love.

The Croatian National Theater dating from 1907, Museum of Slavonia, Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, as well as the Waldinger, Kazamat and Barutana galleries are unmissable addresses for art lovers!

Take a walk along the Promenade, one of the most beautiful streets in Osijek, with numerous magnificent city palaces and the most beautiful Art Nouveau buildings in Europe!

The people of Osijek are also proud of their football club Osijek and its new giant accomplishment, the most modern football stadium in Croatia, Opus Arena!

In Osijek, you can taste popular delicacies: Slavonian kulen, faširanci, fish paprikash, čobanac, sataraš, pasta with cabbage, roast game meat, dumplings with plums, pasta with jam, chocolate from Osijek factories – Kandit… In addition, you can refresh yourself with a homemade invention: black Radler – Osijek beer. Osijek is the birthplace of the first Croatian beer! Wines from Slavonia and Baranja are also worth mentioning: pinot, chardonnay, merlot, graševina… The highest quality wines in history, which were served during the coronation of British monarchs, were made here!

At the end of this colorful Osijek postcard, we are honored to invite you to our School and our beautiful city! Welcome to Osijek!
